  •  This is great analysis (6+ / 0-)

which makes me think it's too much for Congress. I completely agree that the criteria for the AWB were completely ridiculous and need to be rewritten from the ground up. But I wonder if a simpler set of criteria couldn't be created around a combination of features such as: a semi-auto weapon with a clip larger than five rounds. The only purpose for such a weapon is to kill large numbers of people. They should only be in the hands of trained persons with an official reason for owning one.

but we also need to deal with magazines that can be changed very quickly, that's why I went with rate of fire per minute.  Reducing rate of fire is the key, so a rate of fire limit should be the law, not side issues like magazine size.

Is there a significant difference between guns that have removable clips in how quickly they can be switched?

        •  Yeah, huge differences (6+ / 0-)

one of the real defining features of 'assault weapons' is how quickly a magazine can be switched.  Even the 1994 assault weapons ban did some good on that, but the gun companies did some creative engineering to skirt the law, basically allowing the speed of switching magazines to be more or less the same as before the law.

That is one of the prime reasons I created this whole crazy standard in the diary.  Stop banning features, designs and such...and instead ban capabilities (a combination of bullet size, bullet speed and rate of fire).  Those can't be dodged by nifty engineering tricks...cause they are the actual thing that causes   guns to do what they do.
