    This is about corporate profit.

Did some research on "skeletor" a couple of years ago  and there are two companies involved Rapiscan and L3 Communications - with government skeletor scanner contracts of $165 and $173 million respectively (back then).

In addition to that both firms spend hefty amounts of money on lobbying.  Rapiscan even established an office in DC about a year ago to be closer to the politicians for lobbying purposes.  These lobbyists include people who were former Homeland Security, Aviation Administration and Aviation Security.

The other thing is that legislators at the state and federal level are talking about expanding the use of the skeletor machines - not cutting back on them.  They are expanding them to smaller airports, train stations, and into government buildings.

Another thing is that some of the placement of these machines is done through legislation that would need to be reversed, which could be difficult since Rapiscan has their own PAC.

Thom Hartman calls the skeletors - kabuki security theatre.  I guess I would call this press release kabuki "safety concerns" theatre.

Being the cynic I am  - I really don't think anything will happen -  even if the report notes that skeletor kills a million people a year.

Cause right now in the US corporate profit is all that matters.  And right now, the corporations can squash most anything they want to.

Whether the National Academy of Sciences study is government funded or becomes a "public/private" partnership - meaning a private corporation pays for the study that NAS does.

Komen For the Cure pulled this stunt a couple of years ago when they engaged in a "public/private" partnership that helped NAS pay for a review of research on breast cancer and environmental risk factors.

Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.

        When looking at this process.

        Public-private partnership
Another way of saying - we have to let the corporations have their way. (My cynicism from working on ALEC so much coming out).

Thanks for bringing that up - an excellent point.

as were a lot of other breast cancer activists.  NAS was one of the few bastions of unbiased scientific study left in the federal government.   To see this happen under a Dem president was doubly disappointing.  This is the kind of thing that Bush II engaged in.

to the report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM)

To their credit, they made sure to publicize the fact that Komen funded this "study", but it never should have been allowed.  IOM was capable of doing this analysis on their own, without help from Komen.

          •  Funders don't call the shots for reputable (0+ / 0-)

organizations & researchers when it is disclosed and the funder has no control over design or publication.

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... *I'm asking you to believe in yours.* Barack Obama
