    after 9-11.  I recall reading about so many of these companies lining up with their lobbyists in DC trying to sell DHS and Congress on the latest gadget or subcontracting scheme.  

    Airport security became a billion dollar industry virtually overnight. Congress was just throwing money at it without looking closely at quality or effectiveness or need.

    Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.

      There are many times when the government acts in the way you described because the public demands that it "do something."  The problem, as you mentioned, is that sometimes the "something" is inefficient, poorly conceived, and expensive.  And the charlatans come out of the woodwork with promises of grand schemes.
