      Yes, recess is essential. At my girls school, recess isn't taken away indiscriminately, but it is one of the few carrots that is available to teachers/aides. If the child is not using their time wisely (playing) during class, then shaving a few minutes off of recess time to finish the work is natural consequences. Repeated bad behavior or piles of unfinished work will result in the whole of recess being forfeited(possibly is the Support Room for truly bad behavior.) Remember these are elementary age children. At least at our school the choice of after school detention is not feasible due to childcare arrangements and bus routes. Some parents are not able to get to school to pick up the child at those times. If your 8 year old didn't get off the bus as scheduled you would probably be upset. The Cafeteria aides will sometimes offer to supervise extra recess time (5 minutes or so) to reward good behavior at lunch.

      Oh for crying out loud!
