    It allowed the states to set the most restrictive property owning qualifications they chose without losing any electoral clout.  If state A allowed all adults to vote, while all the other states only allowed white males owning 1,000 or more acres of land to vote, there would be more voters in state A then the other 12 states combined, state A would control the presidential election, and the other 12 states would be pressured to expand their voting qualifications.  With the electoral college, it doesn't matter if 1 percent of adults in the state vote or 100%.

    Second, the electoral college extended the 3/5 compromise to presidential elections, giving southern slave states that extra 3/5 vote per slave in presidential as well as House elections and thereby expanded the power of the slave states vis a vis the free states.
