  •  David54, thank you for this: (8+ / 0-)
White people need to get their head out of their ass.
    (I'm white.)
So many truths in your entire comment.

    Frighteningly so.

I happen to live in the south-as do in-laws & offspring.  My offspring & myself are transplants to the south-as are an assortment of in-laws.

During the past 5 years, I have been stunned & confused when coming to the realization that it is not the "just old white men" meme regarding white voter foolishness (at least in the south I inhabit).

I'm hearing/seeing kiddos born in the 70's & 80's sounding like "old white men"-college educated & not. Transplants or not.

Scares the shite out of me.

    •  Agree with much of the analysis, but it's an over- (0+ / 0-)

simplification and incorrect that all white GOP voters are racist (which is not to say that they aren't quite a few).

I don't think we'll see a major change in the voting patterns of some segments of the white population, in my lifetime.

      1) Clinton's signing of NAFTA and other disastrous trade pacts, from the perspective of a displaced blue collar worker, 2) the GOP's hold on single issue (right-to-life) white evangelicals, and 3) as of 2010 and the passing of Obamacare, the Democratic Party bleeding 'senior' voters, has actually put the GOP on the footing of becoming EVEN MORE WHITE, if that's possible.

The GOP will simply repackage its policies, hoping to win over some of the more socially conservative immigrants, etc.

I don't necessarily think that it will work, but I certainly don't expect a sea change in their actual party tenets.

And many demographers question that the coalition that's won for Dems recently, will stay together, absent a Democratic Party Candidate of Color.

Apparently, many Dems are putting their presidential hopes on LA's Antonio Villaraigosa, hoping to appeal to the growing demographic of Hispanic voters.

Young people may be trickier.  It will depend, IMO, on the severity of the "Grand Bargain" austerity package that we wind up with.

The passing of too severe a 10-year austerity package could reverse the trend of young folks (especially college bound) leaning Democratic.  Only time will tell.  The best way to avoid this would be to NOT implement a so-called Grand Bargain, which will escalate unemployment (if Bowles-Simpson's recommendations are the framework.)

Certainly, unions are only getting weaker, and in another twenty years or so, I wouldn't be surprised if  they're basically obsolete.  Which will further depress the Democratic Party's white vote.  Unions need to reinvent themselves, in order to save themselves.

And yes, there are, and will always be, the garden variety bigots.  But in time, they will become a smaller segment of the GOP.
