  •  saw a battery powered helo with a hooman fly (8+ / 0-)

cautiously, slowly at low outgrowth of the RC helicopters/quad/octocopters.

Had one here flying a camera to photograph a film opening.

They are so cheap I expect that those highly paid news teams will all have one soon, heh.

Then there were the RC octocopters used at OWS to spy on the cops.

But different principles...or is it principals...anway....

    •  Those kinds of uses of RC aircraft (4+ / 0-)

are the bane of legitimate hobbyists.  The Academy of Model Aeronautics is working closely with the FAA on regulations that will not stifle the hobby.  Using camera equipped models to spy on people is illegal without a huge amount of paperwork and waivers.  The Feds don't have much of a sense of humor about such antics.  For one thing, rotor blades can be seriously dangerous even if it is just a model airplane powered by a LiPo battery.

        different rulz..

rotors in a shroud on some designs but not all.
Then there's the guy in the balloon powered lawn chair over LAX, they were pretty grumpy about that, and he was armed!

For about $2k you can get one that will fly gps waypoints, taking pictures and livestreaming video that will come back and land itself. The guy landed one inside Lawrence Livermore Lab grounds...also grumpy.  He took his kids along to retrieve it...

Attacks by crows and eagles seems they are grumpy too :>

        •  the crows and eagles are not amused (4+ / 0-)

Well, the crows probably are, come to think of it.

Anyway, we live in interesting times. And let's all be considerate about how we use technology, and why regulations may need to be considered.
