The most toxic political missteps are often the most simple, especially when they reinforce the public's suspicions.

The age-old charge against the Republican Party is that they are the party of the rich and don't care about anyone who isn't well-to-do.

Here, the Republicans fought like hell to spare the richest two percent from having their taxes raised back to where they were a decade ago. They fought like hell, and brought the federal government to the edge of the fiscal cliff.

And yet they couldn't find time to pass an aid package for the victims of Sandy.

Again, the age-old charge against the Republican Party is that they are the party of the rich, and don't care about anyone who isn't well to do. (Lather, rinse, repeat)

It's all very simple. And, time after time, they reinforce the public's darkest suspicions, because those suspicions are correct.

Politics can be complicated, and you can get lost in the weeds. But we all saw and experienced (at least via TV) the devastation caused by Sandy. And everyone can understand that the GOP had higher priorities than to help our fellow Americans to cope and rebuild.
