Whatever short-term chaos, the long-term prospects for the GOP were better in 1993, clearly. There was "room to grow," in terms of charismatic, promising, up-and-coming politicians. Today, not so much. The demographics are in the tank, too. And I think the resulting low morale is affecting that whole side of the aisle, if only unconsciously.

In Chinese history they call it the dynastic cycle.

First period is a period of expansion and strife

Second period is of consolidation and stability.  Usually the peak of said cycle

Third period is one if decay, decline, corruption, nepotism, power struggle and eventual dissolution or end.  The end is usually achieved by a revolution that ends up being successful.

Reagan was the beginning of this conservative cycle, 1994 and Newt were the middle and Bush jr was the beginning if the third period of the conservative cycle.  2006-2008 were revolts against leadership followed by 2010 counter and 2012 which is hopefully the beginning of the end of this era.  The final push towards Berlin so to speak.  What we're seeing now is complete disarray inter party fighting among remaining figures for leadership.

The difference between 1994 and 2010 is one between a party on he way up, expanding its base and consolidating its power and one that is in the final throes of power holding on with all it's remaining strength to it knowing full well it's losing its grip.

      •  Fascinating comment, thanks. (0+ / 0-)

For the fits and starts we're seeing, I believe the Democrats are most definitely in an up-swing, where the Republicans were in the late 1970s or so.
