    Like cockroaches and rats, we are extremely adaptable, hence our current huge numbers. Maybe 95% of us will die, probably in wars over resources, but enough of us will survive to repopulate the ravaged Earth.

      but mass extinction events are always harder for the animals higher on the food chain; they need more of a robust support network under them to survive.  I have no doubt that some of will live, but most will not.  Your 95% is probably a pretty good casualty estimate.

      In any event, we're looking at thousands of years before the biosphere recovers, and that's on the low end.  What confuses me is how we can be worked into such a frenzy over something like a terrorist crashing a plane into a building, but not something like the impending crash of a planetary ecosystem or the prospect of billions of deaths and collapse of global civilization.

      Certain otherwise clever primates seem to have skewed priorities.
