  •  My house was purple (17+ / 0-)

and still is.  When my children were younger, we openly talked about politics.  We explored the Democratic, Independent and Republican parties.  Socialism, Communism, Marxism. None were off limits.  I made it clear to all it's a personal right and choice for each.

Today, we have a mix that leads to some lively debates and we all walk away the wiser.  For example, Tagg Romney's lack of respect for President Obama was the topic of one "debate", more like outrage expressed most vociferously.  Our POTUS is respected by all, whether one voted for him or not.  It's a RESPECT thing, something I stressed again and again.  (OK, so I POUNDED a bit on this one.)  My children agreed: lucky for Tagg I wasn't his mother.
Regardless of party, all elected politicians are meant to do what is best for ALL Americans. My daughter often says they are SUPPOSED to be human rights activists, a view shared by all.

In my purple house, we agree more often than not.  It's usually the little points we agree to disagree on. It gets a little heated now and then, but that's OK. It beats NO dialogue.  This gives me much hope for America, which is currently more divided than I've ever seen before.  If a purple family can agree and work together, so can Americans.

I'm new to Kos and can't figure out WHY I never found it before now.  I can't swear I'll always be civil, but I'll try. :-)

      •  It's a family thing (3+ / 0-)

passed down from one generation to the next.  I had a GREAT teacher, my father.  I call him the original fact checker.  He was not one to blindly follow anyone, no matter who they were.  According to him, politicians unanimously believed we lost our sense of smell..there's bulls*** somewhere!
We also weren't allowed to disrespect race, color, creed, physical or mental challenges, etc...  Learn instead.
And he was a Republican! Gotta love it!
