The Bad News: Dialogues through a written medium encourage misunderstandings and annoyance. (The lack of face and voice cues make comments seem harsher, and BTW make it difficult to "rely upon humor to ... gently disarm someone", which was recommended upthread, and I think it is far from sufficient to merely "[not] write anything that you wouldn't say to a person's face."  Rather, it is ideal to avoid un-reflectively following your "face to face" style, and especially humor, in written postings.

The Good News: Since most Dkos posters have not disclosed their real identity, this should make it easier for us to not take personal offense at comments that might be objectively offensive.

The Best News (when confronted with an offensive poster) is the big audience of many other posters and  even more lurkers.  Any poster who thinks about it would probably agree that an offensive post serves to discredit the poster with that audience, and that a de-escalating reaction improves the audience's opinion of the de-escalator.

(Moreover, even being 'in the right' will often not protect a poster, who is sucked into an angry dialog, from losing some audience respect).

Slowing down and reminding oneself about all the above before clicking "post" should be useful step to self-control, and to achieving the following through our Dkos participation:

    making friends,

influencing people to support and help us refine our individual views, and

developing shared priorities and consensus action items.
