  •  look, if the goal is to leave SS alone (7+ / 0-)

we need to keep/expand our power in congress.  bottom line.

because no matter what economic stuff goes our way, the gun issue is a whole separate beast, with more dems against gun control than a lot of people seem to think.

this diary is about my belief that an AWB would hinder our goal of retaining/expanding power.

you don't think it would; please lead us through what brought you to that conclusion, instead of just saying "nuh-uh."  that would actually be contributing to the discussion.

There is a core segment of the pro-gun community that is die hard Republican.  Nothing is going to change this, period.  Cedwyn is also correct that there are also a lot more pro gun, opposed to gun control democrats than is apparent at first glance.  I am one of them and since joining the gun community about one and half years ago, I have seen growing numbers.  The unfortunate truth of the matter is that gun control, or rather BANS directly impacts people and force them to choose what priorities are important to them.  I am a left leaning individual in many regards and support many politically left initiatives that don't directly impact me on the basis that I believe in them.  I don't think that the proposed AWB, magazine capacity limits, online sales, etc, will have any impact in terms of preventing mass shooting tragedies or crime, but they certainly have prompted me to question my loyalties lie and who best represents my personal interests.
