How does a child speak in quotes? Whom does he quote? Isn't this an indication of some cognitive ability?

I kid you not. Say he bumps his toe. He says:

I slipped on an icecube and got covered in boo-boos
If he doesn't have enough allowance to buy something, he says
      Because.. I'm...all..out...of...MONEEEYYYY!
(BTW, he's reading some of this over my shoulder right now!)

He adapts the quotes thusly: Last week, my wife had a cold. She began to laugh at something on TV then began to cough. Andrew said (in a perfect imitation of Patrick) "Wow, Mommy, you're choking!" The actual quote is "Wow, Squidward, you're choking".

Andrew's cognitive function is very high; so high the school disctrict had the "throw" their IQ test and, yes, they actually admitted it, this is not a parent's "I know my kid is smart no matter what you say!") to ensure he would still qualify for services.

I'd rather let a thousand guilty men go free than chase after them.

it was Thomas the Tank Engine when he was very little, then on to Princess Bride and Monty Python. He'd describe someone who had annoyed him as a 'cheeky little engine' for example. Oh he also could recite the alphabet thanks to Dr. Seuss, and he could write his name by the time he was 3. But he couldn't tell you his name. He would spell it. Literally, he would say "Say R.." etc. and tell you how to spell it.
