Flournoy is a hawk and a neoliberal interventionist who supported PNAC and a large expansion of the US military, and advocates for continued military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hagel's past positions on specific social issues really is cherrypicking at this point – he's apologized and DADT repeal is settled law which he is not going to peel back in an Obama administration.

What progressives should be focusing on is:

    Can Hagel downsize the Pentagon?
Will he resist Iran military engagement?
Will he assert independence from the Israel hawks?
Will he prefer diplomacy to military adventurism?
Will he advance the causes of US veterans?

The answer to all of those questions is a strong yes.

Folks should keep an open mind with Hagel. Begin by reading this Daily Beast profile and then this piece by the (openly gay) Steve Clemons, who has long been Hagel's strongest public advocate.
