Kasich's popularity has improved in 2012 - he's done exactly what he should have since the SB5 defeat in toning himself down. The decent economy in Ohio is also helping him, plus the state assembly is so conservative that Kasich now seems very moderate in comparison.

He is beatable with the right candidate, but with Strickland out and Tim Ryan seemingly disinclined to run that leaves:

Richard Cordray - head of the Consumer Protection Bureau, former AG, state treasurer, Jeopardy champ

Ed Fitzgerald - Cuyahoga County Executive, former Lakewood mayor

These are the two most talked about names. Cordray would be best, he came even closer than Strickland to holding on to the AG seat in 2010 and has only increased his stature since then.

Fitzgerald is highly ambitious, and has a positive story to tell in how he's reformed the famously corrupt Cuyahoga County government. However, he is not known statewide and could be accused of quitting before the job is done in Cleveland, which still has a long way to go.

After that, you have names like Betty Sutton, Michael Coleman, & Mark Mallory who could make a run for it - though I haven't heard anything about them seriously considering it, I would definitely support Sutton if she ran.
