Kelly Ayotte would be my #2, though it's far more likely that she moves to a cabinet position given the amount of time it would take.  It's hard to see a path to ML for any female senators in the near future.

    •  I still wonder if she can keep winning in NH (3+ / 0-)

If the state keeps trending in the D direction, she'll have fight on her hands in 2016

      •  she'll get a fight in any case (5+ / 0-)

If she starts to vote more like Susan Collins on most issues even while echoing McCain on foreign policy, she should be fine. If she votes like Bob Smith, she'll likely lose.

Her approvals in NH are pretty good, even though her record is conservative so far. That doesn't seem to be a dealbreaker in NH, which has a strong libertarian streak. But buddying up with McCain and Graham and indulging in more partisan hackery like the Susan Rice smears aren't going to help her.

about Susan Rice, either way. I think black voters give a damn because they see a subtext, but NH has a very small black population. And the fact that Ayotte is a woman would blunt any concern women would have, but I doubt that's a big deal, anyway.
