    stolen books' thunder, at least in terms of the power to change minds (movies and TV) and speed of breaking the story (TV and the internet).

    Perhaps the books that make a watershed in public opinion these days don't get read by America as a whole, as your three examples did: they make paradigm shifts among opinion makers and intellectuals.
