One was a week-long trip driving all around the Four Corners area, including Zion and the Grand Canyon. We went in early April, before it gets hot. That was in the early '80s. I ate my first Navajo taco, something I've had many times since at powwows.  I won't describe what it looks like in the Southwest; everyone knows.

The other was also in the '80s. A friend who lives in London and I took the overnight train to Cardiff, then rented a car. We spent a week touring the north of England. Our budget was decent, but not unlimited and we could stay in hotels and eat not-so-good, or sleep in hostels and eat well. We went with the hostel option and ate wonderful, local food in small restaurants, cafes and pubs.

There were sheep, lots of sheep. And ruins of castles and abbeys. Miles and miles of dry stone walls. The York Minster and Jorvik Viking Centre Cliffords Tower, where many Jews were murdered during a pogrom in the 12thC.

Did I mention there were sheep?
