aren't so much the places as the people (and the tuneage) that accompany them.

We had great road trips as kids, since my folks would never contemplate traveling any other way (one with my maternal grandmother and her spit can in the back seat), others with my paternal grandfather who used to take us along on his selling trips in the summer.

Then, a couple of memorable ones in college (and one that never happened, but that I wax romantic about anyway), mostly to Myrtle Beach, SC or Atlantic Beach, NC.  And then all of those when I was driving long distances to be with my beloved of that period.  The stomach churning and anticipation in those is hard to capture now with the distance of time and space intervening so.

A life-altering one from Hannover, BRD to Seville, Spain, and then another to Ostuni, Italy.  A harrowing one (with me driving) from London to York to Edinburgh.  And a couple of truly sentimental ones with small boys in tow.

In most of those that have taken place since my childhood, I've been the principle driver, which is not my preferred position on a road trip.  But that's the way life works out when you're by yourself for large segments of your life.
