I've been reading "Deer Hunting with Jesus"--a book that explains why low income rural folks vote Republican against their own self interest. One factor is lack of education--can't get much but RUsh on the radio, and his memes are repeated over and over by the "big shots" in towns, like the realtors and landlords. Then there's some basic bigotry--If everyone is piling on top of me I gotta find someone to pile on, maybe someone whose skin is a little darker? And then there's just the basic struggle to survive each day, and fear that tomorrow might even be worse. GOPers are great at creating fear. (Get yerself a gun, they're comin' at ya.)

Judd is creative, attractive and sincere. The "little folks" will at least listen to her. If she launches a REALLY creative campaign, telling people exactly the effect McConnell has had on their house payment, their kid's school and their kitchen table, she'll win. But it would have to be iconoclastic. Look at Heidtkamp in North Dakota. We are from there. Her "Hot Dish for Heidi" and Saturday night stops at the local bars after the football games were classic North Dakota! There are undoubtably similar traditions Judd can tap into.

    Mellencamp in Indiana!

    •  Heidi won because Rick Berg cheated (0+ / 0-)

on his Libbie/gunner voters and sneaked a pro-drone clause into the FAA Bill. Enabled putting 30,000 godawful surveillance drones in the air, looking over their shoulders.

Spend $750,000 on it and everybody in ND gets to know about Berg's perfidy. And some of the details of his love of money.

(And get to laugh afterward at the $60,000,000 spent on the Massachusetts seat.)

      McConnell's dirty, too.

Heidi did things I've never seen a local candidate do. And the Bishops actually had a letter read from the pulpit Sunday before instructing Catholics not to vote for the "likeable" candidate.

My very Republican relatives haven't forgiven the couple who worked tirelessly for Heidi because they liked HER, not because they hated Berg.

          by hard work. Great candidate.

But it still took Berg showing his true colors, lack of character to put her over the top -- plus a timely investment to make that stick.

The letter ordering Catholics not to vote for her backfired. We can only hope they keep doing that. Over and over again.
