  •  Actually Florida Atlantic is a real (17+ / 0-)

    university. My kid considered going to their Honors College which is on a different campus. Now she is at New College of Florida which is an Honors College Only. I am embarassed to live in the same state as this guy. On the facility also is a chief neocon enabler Walid Phares who was an active agent in the Lebanese Civil War in the 80s as a Druze militia leader. He was also a Romney foreign policy adviser and a Bush adviser.

    The Honors College at FAU is the Harriet Wilkes Honors College. Has a good reputation unlike the rest of the university. It is like judging The University of Chicago based only on their economics department.

    •  To be fair, (7+ / 0-)

      U of C does not hire the dumb monetarists.  While many professors have been and are conservatives, not all are, but that's a different category of critique.  No part of the U of C is a diploma mill, whereas I suspect much of FAU may be.

      Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

        institution. U of C did educated the Chicago boys who wrecked havoc with Central and South American economies. It goes beyond Miolton Freeman. Strauss in the philospohy department. Lucas, von Hayek, Gary Becker Richard Posner have all had an outsized influence on the poor state of economics. And Freidman is by no means the most conservative.

        You suspect FAU is a dipolma mill. Which means you do not know. You really should do some research before you make sweeping statments like that. At Wilkes major biology and pharmacology research is being done. Wilkes attracks IB students from all over the coutry. They send a lot of kids to medical school.

        I do not make assumptions about U of C. I speak from experience. I lived in Chicago and had many friends who went to school there including people who studied economics as well as philosphy and social psychology and theology. My kid considered Chicago and was accepted but chose New College instead in part becaiuse she did not want to carry the debt load. I was accepted by U of C in the 70s and did not go because I could not afford it. I have friends who are still paying off student loans from graduate school in the 80s.

        So what do you know about the state university system in Florida?

          such as a pro-Birch Society poster, here, who challenged to define what they're up to. Not a hard problem. Start at their web site:

          -- Government Attitude Towards Elderly Leads to Euthanasia
          -- Oppose Ratification of the UN Treaty on Disability Rights
          -- Voter Fraud
          -- Signs of a Declining Economy
          -- Russia Rising and Communism Isn't Dead
          -- Nobel Prize Goes to EU. Communist President of EU Commission Thankful.
          -- Arab Unrest and Voter Fraud (in America somehow)
          -- Ron Paul Drummed Out of Republican Party and Corruption of the Republican Party
          -- Questions about the Aurora Colorado Movie Shooting
          -- Attack on Christianity and Restore Religious Freedom in America
          -- United Nations Ordering U.S. Troops to War
          -- Long-term Goal of a United Nations Standing Army Behind the Syria Solution
          These are lead articles from recent months, as JBS tries to present itself as a MOR, sensible operation. From the web site.

          The Aurora piece is a classic. The CEO of JBS states the question of how the shooter got his guns as a mystery. An indication that sinister assistant(s) or financial backers were involved. The country is under a tsunami of guns and Aurora's a mystery.

          If you want to see paranoia at work, have a great time with that one.

          You can also follow "non-JBS-member" Ron Paul, who's been a fellow traveler for decades:

          -- Allow anybody to mint money by passing the "...Free Competition in Currency Act, which repeals legal tender laws and all taxes on gold and silver."    --    Force the FDA and the FTC to allow any dietary supplement onto the market "...unless they have clear evidence that the manufacturer's clams are not true." This is a prescription for endless lawsuits.
          -- Kill Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for future generations;
          -- End Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits for people getting them now --but giving them "...time to prepare for the day when responsibility for providing aide is returned to those organizations best able to administer compassionate and effective help--churches and private charities."
          -- Fire up to 800,000 federal workers through attrition, not filling vacancies for "non-essential" jobs.
          -- Veto budgets he didn't like;
          -- Substantially defund federal education programs;
          -- Defund the Byrne Grants that help local police fight interstate crime.
          Wonderful citizens, not paranoid and surely not ignorant of the basic workings of modern industrial societies. Not ignorant of capitalist economics.... Not ignorant of the pay-back that comes with public investment in education for children. Not wacked out thinking communes of Israelis and Hippies were Hell on earth.

          The Russians are coming !!

          Pigs fly ! And talk. I saw the ad on t.v.

        •  U of C Law grad (0+ / 0-)

          I think the line of criticism in the thread was re FAU's academics.  You singled out the Wilkes school as something positive, and many schools have such programs, without necessarily reflecting well on other parts of the university. Diploma mill is too harsh, but there's no possible comparison to Chicago.  I'm most familiar with Posner among that list, who isn't uniformly conservative, but Freshwater or no, none of those people engage in conspiracy theories.  Showing that they are wrong advanced the profession and required innovation in thought; showing this guy is wrong proves nothing.  Aaron Director's work on antitrust mostly still stands, I'd say.

          I know some people from U of F who speak highly of it, and a few grads of FSU who don't.

          Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

          •  I in no way compared UC to FAU. Chicago was ranked (1+ / 0-)

            as the 7th best university in the world by an international organization. The Chicago School of Sociology was revolutitionary and ground breaking. As well their School of Social Work. The law school is top 5. They spilt the atom on campus for the first time in history (the library stands over the site now). Carl Saqan, Enrico Fermi studied and taught there. Michele Obama was the CEO of the hospital. President Obama taught law there. They have the best academic kibrary in the world.

            My point is that you know nothing about FAU. So you before you criticize an institution you should do soime research. You learned how to do that in law school. There is no comparison between FAU and Chicago. Just as there is no comparison between Iowa State and Canmbridge. But you dismiss a school based on one bad faculty member. By that standard Chicago's name should be mud because of the influence of the finance school and the economics deptartment. Because lots of those folks helped tank this economy and other economies in the world. For God's sake Friedman was a paid consultant to numerous South American dictators. And was tied to the people who murdered Salvador Allende. Through the Chicago boys. How much of modern libertarianism started with Strauss in philosphy and von Hayek in economics?

            Now go see if anyone connected to FAU compares to this. And yes I know about Walid Phares and the Druze in Lebannon. See if you can find more examples before you call a school a diploma mill with any knowledge of the place.

            NOw you want to talk diploma mills look at Florida International University in Miami.

        •  I know alot about the Florida system and (0+ / 0-)

          FAU is a festering slime-hole of a university.

          Those of us who live here call it F*kin A*hole University
