We've been a successful virus. So successful that we are on the verge of killing our host.
Gaia can only really support about 1 billion people and it can't support them in the style that Americans call our standard of living.
The virus has triggered Gaia's immune response and the fever is one of her ways of fighting us off.
It won't matter if you're rich or poor, where you live, how you live, when everything that's not able to swim away from their normal habitats and are lucky enough to find a new habitat they can survive in, are gone. All the ducats in the world won't buy food that doesn't exist any more.
And the fact that this is coming so fast means that even the good swimmers are probably cooked.
As a species, if there is a galactic history being written, we will have failed. In just half a million years, we went from carnivorous apes on the Serengeti to "Masters of the Universe" to extinct.
Our only hope for human life to continue is migration into space and only then if we can figure out how to make a self-sustaining, closed loop environment for ourselves.
I'm not willing to bet that we will be able to. Sorry.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
