which pretty much translates into intellectual cowardice. Those who know but are just too damn lazy or selfish to give up even the slightest of personal luxuries are perhaps even worse than those who don't know better. And I'm not necessarily talking about recycling and buying organic food, but things like actively resisting and working against any changes in zoning laws geared towards creating more walkable cities because you'd perhaps have to move to a different part of town. Berkeley, CA which lives off the reputation of being super left and progressive is actually one of the worst. It took Ecocity Builders more than 20 years to get one block cleared for pedestrian use only. 20 friggin years, one small block, and it was worse than pulling teeth.

So that's basically what we're up against: Lots of posturing about the dangers of climate change, but very little public willingness to make the fundamental infrastructural changes that would actually enable us to live in a less fossil-fueled world. It's perhaps just human nature, but ultimately most people only think of themselves and their own immediate comfort. Considering that we have such big brains, the shortsightedness and stupidity is dazzling, seeing that all the comfort is built on a completely unsustainable use and indiscriminate burning of fossil fuels that took millions of years to form and are very limited. If we were smart and caring about future generations, we'd give up a little comfort and convenience to build a system that will enable those after us to live and thrive.

wüßt ich auch nicht was dann wär ...

We just care for ourselves and the now and may be for our kids, but only if the threat is immediately in front of us and we and our kids are about to die.

First time I see you almost angry ... 20 years for a pitiful, tiny pedestrian block ... no wonder.

Nach dem Motto, wer nicht hören will, muß fühlen ... da muß mehr passieren als ... just talk.

      Great comment.

        that's how it went, right?

After looking at all the diaries on the rec list today, I couldn't help but feeling angry at our collective inertia. I haven't lost hope in humanity yet, but I just want to shake it! : )
