    And then, in NYC, people with Spanish accents come from so many different places:  Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador - all more likely than Mexico, in my experience.  But a lot of places in this country, they hear a Spanish accent, and they assume Mexico, with all the bullshit baggage they assign to that.  Of course, for a lot of those folks, it doesn't matter; a Spanish accent means you're one of THEM, however they define "THEM" in their tortured little brains.
