While they're at it, why not take a cue from Apple and mint ten thousand $10,000 "I Am Rich" apps coins in platinum with the faces of Republican notables.  Surely Romney and others would want to collect the whole set.  It's not like paying taxes, after all.

Oh, but wait.  Even 10,000 of these $10,000 coins would only add up to a hundred million.  Hell, nowadays you can't even buy the Republican nomination for chump change like that (ask Newt and Sheldon if you don't believe me), much less buy a Presidency or pay off the national debt.   And even with 10 faces in a set and full subscription, the whole edition STILL only brings in a paltry billion.

Sigh.   I'm sure Senator Dirksen could have made some kind of sense out of this small-change conundrum, but I find myself deflated.

      •  The real genius (0+ / 0-)

The real genius behind the "I Am Rich" app lay not in having the idea in the first place but in recognizing that a few people would actually buy it instead of merely, like the rest, having a good laugh at the notion of it.

He exploited a sort of reverse "laughing all the way to the bank" phenomenon to create something where people who bought it were laughing all the way to the checkout button.

There's a post-modern cynicism to it that reminds me of Agent Krendler happily eating a bit of his own brain that Hannibal Lecter has sautéed and served to him with.
