it's always the woman's fault, no matter the circumstances. It's her fault if she's raped. It's her fault if her husband has an affair. It's her fault if her husband ignores her or her kids make trouble or her husband makes trouble and so on and so on and so on, ad nauseum. Men, on the other hand, can't control themselves. Men aren't responsible for their own actions. Men aren't responsible for anything that Pat Robertson and those others of his ilk don't believe fall into the masculine domain. Men are owed sex and pretty girls and being waited on hand and foot. And if they don't get those things they're owed, well then, ladies, don't be surprised if the men go elsewhere. It's personally horrifying that Robertson and Dobson and Perkins, et al, really believe that this is fact-est fact and true-est truth.

The whole "Men-are-barbarians-and-it's-up-to-women-to-civilize-them/please-them/contain-them" thing underlies most (if not all) of western history and culture. It's really big in the conservative evangelical women's groups. And it explains why America, in particular, is having such a hellacious time getting past this cultural stumbling block. So many of America's cultural ideals were formed during the Second Great Awakening, when evangelicalism swept through the Euro-American population. It took exceptionally strong root in the South, where it all got mixed up with race, class, and economic issues. It ended up glorifying passive women and inculcating a streak of misogyny a mile wide and 10 miles deep within the Southern cultural psyche. Now, with Southern cultural values accepted as mainstream in much of the media and the rest of America, that Southern misogyny component is also making things like Steubenville and Pat Robertson's wacko advice mainstream. Not acceptable, mind you, oh no! But this cultural permission to diss women is providing cover for the apologists and "men's rights" folks and the people who don't want to see those poor little boys' lives "ruined by that little slut". If we could change that underlying cultural permission for this sort of behavior, we could have a more egalitarian society. But, as you can see, it's definitely an uphill struggle.

The whole point of society is to be less unforgiving than nature. - Arthur D. Hlavaty

      to the article from Alternet,
      about the brutal aristocrats
      who've taken over America.

      I live in Wichita,
and racism seems pushed to the background,
      at least in the sense
      that black and white folks
      marry each other a lot,
      such as white me
      and my new black bride.

But the Koch brothers office building is here....

There is a very strong conservative culture here.

We are having a serious drought here.

      I mention that,
      because the worst case scenario,
      for America,
      seems to me,
would be for brutal wealthy folks
to gain control of the land,
      and they might produce only
      expensive foods,
and only enough for them and their
      trusted servants,
      those who maintain their
      expensive homes,
      expensive cars,
      expensive private jets,
      second homes,

      If the land is controlled
by folks who are willing to let other folks starve,
      and only then,
will large numbers starve in America.

We really don't have enough good land,
      with enough rainfall,
      to feed 300 million Americans
      unlimited sausage and eggs.

      We are irrigating,
such as from the Ogallah Aquifer,
      in Western Kansas,
      which will run out,
      within 200 years,
      and the mineral salts
      ruin the soil.

      Thanks again.
