  •  Of course. IMO "hard-nosed" means firm & tough, (6+ / 0-)

    not necessarily unloving or nasty.  Firm & loving, IMO, are positively, not negatively, correlated, in the sense that you can't be an effectively loving parent without being a firm one.   (Before retirement I spent too many of what seemed like many long hours as a family therapist trying to get well-meaning parents to be more "hard-nosed.".)  My sons say their upbringing was very confusing because it was like being raised by two extremely conservative (I.e., strict/structured/etc ) hippies.  And they seem to have turned out well, except for a slight tendency toward hyperbole.  And they certainly didn't marry meek wives.
