  •  As long as you hold the police to the same laws (6+ / 0-)

Police in Chicago just shot another unarmed man.  Personally I'm just as sick of police brutality shootings as I am of all other mass killings.

So if you want to ban semi-auto riflles, fine.  Then the cops have to live by the same rules.

The police can own a 6 round revolver, 3 round bolt action rifle, and a pump action shotgun.

And that's it.  No more SWAT, no more police with assault rifles.  Because the police are NOT military.

The police and civilians must be held equal in the eyes of the law.  Else, we will live in a police state.  I'd rather have random killings versus the absolute certanty of genocide when the powerful few have absolute control over the people.

      rephrase to reflect reality?

I'd rather have random killings versus the absolute certanty of genocide....
You actually mean, "I'd rather have the absolute certainty of random killings versus giving up my fantastic illusion that I could overthrow a tyrannical government which possesses tanks and missiles with my gun."

An unsuccessful shoe bomb attack resulted in nine years of inconvenience for every flier in the country. It would be nice to think [this diabolical act] might lead to some similar inconveniences. --mrblifil

      •  Genocide should be messy and bloody (1+ / 0-)

If genocide is going to occur, then it should occur with tanks and missiles and destroy the entire country.  Maybe in the midst of all that carnage, people will come to their senses.  Maybe those in the military would never let it get to that point?  Every think about that?

But when the disarmed are quietly marched onto trains and quietly shipped out to the death camps for extermination, people don't complain quite so loudly, do they?  When genocide is all nice and clean and quiet, what's not to like?
This has happened over and over again througout human history.  It is happening today in certain countries, and it will happen again.

If I die but my wife and child escape, that's better than the alternative isn't it?

shows, ok, not literally everything that is wrong with this country.

Instead of fighting against heimatsecurity theater, you use it to justify more heimatsecurity theater.

      A) The reason that cops have more powerful weapons is because they have been "outgunned" by criminals and others. You probably don't remember the FBI agents slaughtered by semi-automatic rifles in Miami in the 80's.  The agents had revolvers, I believe.
      B)  I want law enforcement to have more powerful weapons than criminals and the wackos.
      C) I suggest a mental health evaluation because of your paranoia about when "the powerful few have absolute control over people."

      •  I want to be on an equal footing.... (3+ / 0-)

with criminals (and yes, some police are criminals.  Not a majority, by far).

So, once you've got them disarmed, I'll co-operate.

        Otherwise, no.

      •  It's called equality. (4+ / 0-)

Either you believe in equality, or you don't. If the police need assault rifles to not be outgunned by criminals, so do I.

See, I'm on my own. The police can call back, radio for backup, set up roadblocks, track with helicopters. What we don't need is the police going Rambo downtown shooting up civilians as they chase the bad guys.

Either the assault rifle is too dangerous for anyone including police to own, or everyone has the equal right to one. I'm fine with either, pick one.

      •  And here is the crux of the problem with some of (0+ / 0-)

the restrictions that have been proposed.  They also accomplish putting the law abiding, responsible citizen at a severe disadvantage.   The citizen will have to face the criminal on the streets and in their own homes.  When the criminal attacks, the entire encounter is typically over in a matter of seconds.  Police response, under the best of circumstances is still several minutes.

While I understand your desire to reduce the ability of criminals and lunatics to possess powerful weaponry, the restrictions will only limit the law abiding.  These restrictions are not a viable answer.
