    if somebody fails an FBI background check, the ATF already has the info.  They rarely follow up though.

    Given that there aren't resources enough to track down people who we know probably are trying to buy guns illegally, I'm not sure what the benefit is of developing leads on people who we suspect might be trying to buy guns illegally.

      The ATF hasn't had a director for years. There aren't enough agents. The gun lobby has crippled the ATF.

      That's why they rarely follow through. They don't have the arms and legs needed to do much of anything.

      My thoughts about detecting folks shopping around for gun dealers is more about detecting and reacting to a potential local problem. It's not about developing leads. It's about detecting those who seem to be suddenly and aggressively trying to buy a gun. A little chat with a police officer might be a good way to calm things down.

      Gun trafficking leads are a whole different matter.
