  •  My Dad joined the Marine Corps shortly after it (11+ / 0-)

was integrated. He grew up in the segregated south. He said he could never understand segregation and no adult explanation about segregation was good cut it with him. He always questioned it even as a small child.
He was so poor and he saw no difference between himself and the poor black kids in his neighborhood except his apartment house faced the streets and theirs faced the alley. But he played with these kids but they could not attend school together or go to the same stores or restaurants or sit together at the movies. He thought it was dumb.  Then in high school, they played a team in baseball that was integrated from Indiana.  He thought that was gerat. So when he joined the Corps and it was integrated, he loved it. One of his best friends in the Marine Corps was African American from Baton Rouge and later was taken prisoner by the North Koreans.  The guy barely survived the North Korean/ Chinese prison camp and he was quite the hero.
