  •  I didn't always agree with Graham... (1+ / 0-)

At times he seemed bit too close to corporations, although that's really the norm in the U.S. Senate. But he was always honest, had a pretty good liberal voting record, and he loves him some Florida. That was always true.

I don't think he ever liked working in Washington. But to this day; I think he knows where a lot of the proverbial bodies are buried. I always wanted to interview him about what he really knows about 9-11 especially.

Overall, I'd relish seeing him get back into state politics -- either the governorship or state party chair -- but, alas, I fear that ship has sailed.

the hassle of running for elected office.  I always have admired him for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that he was one of the few who voted against the Iraq war.  And I agree that he probably knows more about the skeletons in Washington than most.  Basically I think he is a good man at heart.

Since I live in Tall., I had the chance to meet him several times and always found him to be engaged with whomever he was speaking with.  Graham always walked about one mile from the Governor's Mansion to the Capitol each day and could often be spotted walking about downtown during the lunch hour.  He was without airs and extremely approachable at all times.  And yes, he DID write down everything in one of those little notebooks he carried with him at all times.  I remember seeing him do that even way back when he was a young state legislator.

One of the things that sticks out in my mind about the Grahams is that despite their being very wealthy, their daughters attended public schools.  When Graham was Governor, his youngest daughter attended one of the local high schools.  She had not yet completed high school when he left office, so the Grahams bought a modest town home in downtown near the school where she and Adele lived so she could finish out high school there.  They kept that town home as their Tall. residence until Graham left the Senate.

I believe Graham sees his calling now as working to help protect the environment.

Graham or Lawton Chiles, but both were damn good for Florida.
