    Libya’s interim president says he has survived an assassination attempt in an oasis city in the country’s southern deserts.

    The attack comes less than a month after parliament declared the south a restricted military zone and closed its borders with neighboring African states to curb illegal migrants and the smuggling of weapons.

    But these are different times. The Islamists whom Gaddafi worked hard to keep under lock or underground are among the key architects of a new Libya — another, Abdel Hakim Belhaj, whom al-Hassadi says he admires and whom the CIA and MI6 allegedly helped extradite to Libya for torture by Gaddafi's regime, is one of the most powerful military leaders in Tripoli.

      strong democratic ally, but then they are the day after tomorrow's brutal dictatorship, exporter of terrorism, hider of WMDs, and threat to regional stability.
