    what about the environmental cost of the electricity when it is generated from burning coal?  This is a great idea for Seattle where they have lots of hydroelectric energy.

      In the worst case, it depends on the mileage of your current car. An EV will reduce carbon emissions vs your current car if yours gets under 33 mpg in the region with the worst CO2 electric production. In regions with a better electric generation emissions level, the EV will be even better.

      but I have no idea where one would plug it in if one lived in a typical Seattle house or apartment. It's not like single-family homes with attached garages are exactly standard in the denser parts of the city.

      That's actually my major sticking point. I keep thinking that if I buy a car again it'll be an electric car, and then I think: where the hell would I charge it?

        Perhaps talk to the owners of the apartments and see if there is something that could be done.

        It could be a marketing point for the apartments - rent with us so you can have your electric car!
