    JSTOR publications don't buy content from the authors and uses volunteer reviewers and editors, so it bears none of the cost of production. Journalists are paid by the publications, and artists are paid by their labels, but academics are paid by their institutions which ALSO pay to access databases which contain their work product.

    To the extent that this is part of the crisis in the profession of academia, it is not how to pay to produce articles but how to afford the cost to access articles.

    Like most academic databases, JSTOR extracts monopoly rents in exchange for providing rather substandard web hosting because it can.
