Freya is somewhere between 8 and 10, we don't know for sure because we got her from a very very bad shelter where she was extremely malnourished and under weight. Last winter she got a respiratory infection she had trouble kicking and we thought we were going to lose her. This year was better but she was getting lethargic and mopey again.
Then we got Sophie from a rescue last Saturday. Even the neighbors have commented how much more peppy Freya is. She plays with the puppy several times a day (with good naps between), she's eating better, and she's taken an active role in Sophie's training.
Yes we're sure to give her extra praise and attention and she's sometimes jealous of the attention the puppy gets. But I have the feeling that we just extended her life  by a few years, or at least improved her quality of life. Freya is a medium/large breed, she may have another 5-8 years in her, but with her rough start at the bad shelter and not knowing what her life was like before that point I have been worried of the effect that would have on her longevity despite the great care and love she's been given since.
