  •  Well, when people want to focus (7+ / 0-)

on being offended and enflamed rather than the plain sense of a statement. The point, obviously, was "lesser of two evils" and then there was a serious point made.

What did you think about the serious part which followed? I hope you weren't too faint from the poorly-chosen phrase to see it. Agreed that maybe "Bernanke" or "Greenspan" would have been a more artful illustration.

Still, minor point. What about the rest?

    •  I have no desire to (0+ / 0-)

"focus on being offended or inflamed." Good Lord, one gets enough of that without having to focus at all.

In fact, Puddy is someone I have great respect for, and I would never not give her due consideration.

However, I do believe in the power of words.  "Hitler" is a powerful word. "Stalin" is a powerful word.  And the history of those who suffered under both of them is so powerful it should blow your socks off.

A comparison needs to be a fair to make its point. This one was not, imo. Just that simple. It suggested that our decisions today are comparable to choosing between the wisdom of Hitler or Stalin. If you really think we're at that point in this country, then all I can tell you is you are woefully ignorant of just how bad it can get.

      •  Well, my mistake then. (0+ / 0-)

Nonetheless, it's a trivial point, be it a poorly chosen example, in the context of what the author worked to convey.

Again, words are important. Just try to use the N word here sometime to make a point, and then argue that someone didn't see your larger point.  It wouldn't be pretty, and it shouldn't be. Because with your use of that word, you blind people to everything else you say.

To me, we deny the power of certain words at our own expense. I will fight against comparisons to Hitler and Stalin in our current political discourse, because I don't think they belong there.  And I do it with no regrets.
