  •  I would like to hear the reasoning why it is so (10+ / 0-)

.... critical to have freedom of the press, freedom of speech, right to reasonable search and seizure.

American's liberties & freedoms are not subject to your  assessment of 'need'.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.

    •  What about slave ownership? (0+ / 0-)

How do you characterize that reassessment of a "needed" civil liberty?

      Or is that somehow different?

We are incapable of reexamining something that may need revision, I take it.

      •  Eliminating slavery was expanding liberty (9+ / 0-)

AWB is an example of contracting liberty.

A rather significant dissent, wouldn't you agree?

AWB is an example of contracting liberty freedom (of possession).
My take. It seems what some folks call "liberty" (broad based relatively unrestricted gun ownership laws) has to be measured in this debate against public safety, and the relative freeedom to have some peace of mind about ourselves and our children when in public places.

If the right questions are asked, public safety considerations - including for those with CC permits - offered up by all citizens, not just the loudest, will determine where this goes. If Wayne LaPierre keeps talking as he has been, and loud voices support him - public fear of being shot will push the debate towards greater limits.

I have a couple of hunting rifles, and a .22 revolver. The handgun doesn't usually leave the house, the rifles are for hunting, and, yes, if it ever somehow came to that, home defense. Have a shotgun on the 'to-buy' list.

My position is to support what the Biden group has offered, plus states requiring that CC permit holders only carry registered guns. In case they are lost or left behind, you know. Might happen. Google available.
