  •  Don't forget that Kathleen Sebelius was one of the (5+ / 0-)

first major people in Kansas to win doing this.  She (the governor, in case you've forgotten/never knew) and her Lt. Governor used to be Republicans but they were able to win in Kansas.  However, President Obama took her away from Kansas and her Lt. Governor wasn't able to get elected on his own, leaving the state to Brownback and his minions.  President Obama wound up devastating Kansas and Arizona by taking away moderate Democratic female governors for his cabinet, leaving those states to right-wingnuts.  Kansas may never recover.  I still hold out some hope for Arizona because of people like Grivalva.

Arizona will turn blue faster than Kansas simply because of demographics. That said, the Lt. Governor-turned-Governor you refer to (Mark Parkinson) actually didn’t TRY to get re-elected on his own. He refused to run despite Democrats basically begging him to do it.

Opinion polls at the time showed he was quite popular and stood, by far, the best chance of defeating Brownback among all Democrats. He also would’ve been running alongside strong candidates for AG, Treas & SoS (all Sebelius appointees) and might’ve pulled them across the finish line, too.

Sebelius left the KS Democratic Party in better shape than it had been in years, its failures are certainly not her fault, nor the fault of President Obama. Honestly, if I had to blame anyone, I’d blame Parkinson.

Kansan by birth, Californian by choice and Gay by the Grace of God.
