and delayed workup with those neuro symptoms? That is just bizarre on several levels.

I've worked float in EDs enough to be very aware of how desensitized some of those providers can become. It isn't just the really bizarro humor, they lose some capacity for empathy - which is probably self protection.

I had a patient in another job tell me when she was taken to a local ED after a serious traffic accident, she couldn't get any response to her call light when she had to go to the bathroom. When she finally (on IV fluids) got up and went by herself, they got her back on the stretcher and handcuffed her to it because they were convinced her neuro injuries were causing non compliant and impulsive behavior.

She was very concerned that I would think she was nuts. I assured her how familiar I was with aberrant behavior by ED staff and encouraged her to vent. My reality is that people who work in such high stress areas need down time and support after really bad events. Entirely too expensive for hospitals to consider - what would the shareholders think?

    •  I've been hospitalized 5 times (8+ / 0-)

in the last 18 months, and fortunately I haven't had much of a problem with my call lights being answered in either hospital. But if I were told not to get up and nobody came to take me to the bathroom after a reasonable amount of time, I swear I would just wet the bed and let them deal with it.

      •  I've had a lot of patients threaten to. (5+ / 0-)

She was too young and inexperienced with health care - too embarrassed at the thought. Heck, my mother in law in her late 70's crawled out the end of a gurney, while getting IV potassium, to go to the bathroom. That was bad enough. Then I found out she was getting the K+, emergently, without being monitored.

Hospitalized 5 times in 18 months. That's way too much fun with our dysfunctional health care. Condolences. I haven't worked in 18 months. The things I miss wouldn't make up for the rest.
