    the trouble with the calls to keep a database of the "mentally ill" is, it's a wrong-end-of-the-telescope view. It seems obvious when we look at people who have committed horrendous gun crimes that they should not have been able to have a gun. But it is not so easy to look at the entire population, in advance of anything happening, and determine who will be violent in the future. I don't think we'd really like the level of government scrutiny of each of us that would be required to make even a roughly accurate "list" of potential violent offenders.

    Surely there are some people who ought not to be allowed to buy guns, including people who have already acted violently (domestic abusers, for example). But it gets tricky not to cross over into the realm of punishing thought crimes. If the solution were simple, people of good will could agree on it. It's difficult to change culture, and that's what the real fix is. ::sigh::
