    He was offered a deal that involved confessing to 13+ felonies, with all the attendant lifelong consequences.

    Through Twitter, I learned of this old scholarly article, which points out the similarities of our plea-bargaining system to medieval and Renaissance torture, which uses exorbitant threats in order to obtain a confession, even if false.

    Think -- being intimidated and coerced into confessing to crimes that you don't believe you committed could be even more psychologically damaging than prison.

    If we want systemic solutions, we should also be talking about the expanding powers of prosecutors and the perversions of the plea-bargaining system.
