  •  What's hard about BWI? (5+ / 0-)

It's just a nice easy drive up the BW Parkway. Yeah, it's bad at certain times of day (what isn't?), and you can't take the Metro to it like National, but it's hardly the soul-destroying garment-rending voyage of torture that is trying to get to Dulles.

And not let out a steady stream of profanity trying to change lanes just to get into the damn place. Taking the bust here is such a huge pain in the ass too, you might as well just drive it.

    •  You can take MARC to/from Union Station. (4+ / 0-)

I did that once and it was a snap. Took the light rail another time. BWI is one of the most transit-friendly airports I've used.

    •  Amtrak has a stop at BWI/Thurgood Marshall (4+ / 0-)

but it takes quite a bit of time catching busses, etc, over to the terminal.   And, Amtrak ain't exactly cheap, except compared to a taxi, I guess.

Dulles is such an odd experience  -those huge 'people-mover' vehicles are something out of a Jetsonian dystopia.

    •  Compared to National, it's an hour+ more... (3+ / 0-)

...of travel time, and another transfer that could potentially get mucked up due to traffic or Phantom Bus or what-have-you.

Sometimes the cost savings is worth the additional trouble, particularly if a friend is willing to build up his/her Airport Karma by giving me a ride... but in most cases, if it's $50 or less additional cost to fly out of National instead of schlepping all the way up to BWI, I'll usually take DCA for the simplicity of just having to get on a Yellow Line metro train.
