    ...personal point of view. However, law should not be based on anecdote, and there's an obvious corollary to your self defence: intruders are more likely to be armed as well, or to steal your weapon and use it against yourself.

    The individual logic of self defence is completely understandable in conditions of weapons proliferation. It's simple game theory.

    What government and public policy is for is to change the terms of the game. If firearms were way less prevalent, as they are in the UK, you wouldn't even think about needing to be armed beyond a knife or blunt instrument.

    Individual decisions about driving, vaccination etc might make sense to the individual at any one term. But restrictions of individual liberty for the sake of general liberty (that people don't drive under the influence or pass on measles and mumps) are one of the reasons most western democracies have thrived
