employing firearms. I am not a gun fetishist, nor does the NRA speak for me but neither do I believe in unilateral disarmament for the vulnerable while leaving guns in the hands of violent aggressors. I want stricter gun control.

But if everybody has a gun then where is the 'defense' or the 'protection'? It escalates into mutual assured destruction similar to the cold war. If your mother's mugger decided she had something of value to him and pulled a gun, the situation could have been different. If the man who rushed you at the convenience store decided to pull his own weapon, what do you imagine would have been the outcome? If your bio-father decided to fire back at your mother you may have become an orphan. In most of the incidents you describe there are non-lethal alternatives (peppery spray, taser, etc.). These don't work in all cases but if we are content with a weapons escalation where our children are no longer safe then all bets are off. It then becomes a race to see who can obtain and carry the largest firearm. There is a reason that we have been working as a nation to prevent additional rogue countries from obtaining nuclear weapons. Why wouldn't we adopt the same rationale within our own borders?

nation had access to nuclear weapons and delivery systems similar to the policy of citizens in the U.S. having access to every imaginable type of ammo and firearms (as delivery systems). Good thing we haven't managed to spread that philosophy everywhere.

          •  I share your concerns but have chosen in my (0+ / 0-)

personal life to deal with the local situation in a particular manner that seems to me reasonable if at the same time unfortunate.
