that one thing were the key, but I doubt it. Lead paint was in constant use for most of the 20th century (and was recommended by doctors as more sanitary than wallpaper!); if it were the most prominent cause of violent behavior we would have been awash in mayhem for 75 years.

I was very taken with the Roe theory. I hear that recently it's been debunked, though I haven't read up on why yet.

While belief is a poor substitute for data, I think that someday we'll understand that crime waves are caused by multiple factors, most of which have already been identified: poverty, bad parenting (which itself has many causes), lack of education, lack of job opportunity, drugs, environmental factors such as bad nutrition and lead paint...but one thing I don't think will change is that in a heavily-armed society, more people are likely to get shot.

Put simply, if you can't get a gun, you can't shoot anyone. And guns are far deadlier than any other weapon an attacker might choose. Shortly after Sandy Hook, there was an eye-opening diary here (sorry no link) by an EMT, explaining why gunshots are so much more serious than wounds from other types of weapons, especially stab wounds which are rarely fatal. There was a "mirror" incident in China, just a day or two after Sandy Hook, in which a deranged man stabbed 22 schoolchildren. Not one of them died.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)
