    The cold air settles in the lower areas (front range of the Rockies) and the higher mountain areas have warmer temperatures.  It's a common feature when there is a stagnant weather pattern.

      We are trapped between two and a half mountain ranges.  The warm air get's trapped under all the cold that comes in and we get stagnant air warnings..  

      It could be snowing like the devil all around us, but in the Sound area, rain.  West side of the Olympics and the West side of the Cascades get dumped on, the eastern side and the lowlands, eh not so much.

      Heavy snow in the Cascades mean we have enough water for the summer dry spells we get.
