My father was a college professor and I remember when I was a little kid, I was amazed that he knew the janitors at college -- and around town, the bank tellers, store clerks, etc. He spoke to them by name and asked about the news in their lives. And even when he didn't know them, he was polite and friendly.

When I was in high school, my dad asked me, "Do you know David (last name redacted)?" I said, "Yeah, he's really smart. He's a couple years older than me and he's kind of the star of the debate team. He got to the state debate semi-finals this year. And he's going to Yale next year. How do you know about him?" My dad said, "his father is the plumber who just did some work on the house. He's quite proud that his son is going to Yale." I said, "David's dad is a plumber?" My father said, "Yes. And you know, you should never look down your nose at people because of what they do for a living. Everyone deserves dignity and respect."
