...is that there is at least one, and usually more, populist issues that resonate in every single region of the country, no matter how red.

Now that Republicans have, essentially, solidified their hold on the South by shamelessly pandering to racists, bigots and other radical, right-wing extremists, it seems to me that there's one way back for Democrats in the South: populism.

The most effective Democrats in the South, not only currently, but in the past, have had some kind of populist appeal...from Huey Long back in the 1930's and '40's up until more recent populist types like Ernest Hollings of South Carolina.

With large pockets of poverty in parts of the South, it seems to me that populist focused on economic fairness and justice would be the best way for Democrats to start making some cracks in Republicans' solid-red Southern strategy. And...once Democrats can start making cracks into the Republicans' one and only remaining bastion...the Republicans will be forced to either change or go extinct (my preference would be for them to go extinct because they have demonstrated how harmful to this country they are willing to be, just to score a few partisam political points among key demographics (people with lots of money...or lots of hatred)).
