  •  Okay, so here's day two of calling my GOP rep (19+ / 0-)

Larry Buschon in the Indiana 8th.  Just stated my approval of the President's recommendations yesterday.  No problem took the message.

Today called and said the same thing.  Now we have an attempted position statement from the aide.  First she expressed how saddened Rep Buschon was by the violence and oh by the way he's a doctor (long winded and I was not impressed) I waited patiently while this was going on.

Then the aide launched into his position on mental health "pariity" and this was the problem with Sandy Hook.  I asked what that was.  The aide proceeded to practically verbatim outline one of the points the President made in his recommendations and signing statements.  There would be more assurances of mental health services in the implementation of the ACA.  I stated that and I was told "no its not the same".

I brought up the enforcement issues that I had been reading about in the last day and the legislative poison pills that had been inserted over time to block enforcement of the laws we have.  I was told that the laws "are enforced".

I started getting into the details because I know this office and they try to dismiss you if you don't accept their statements as they make them (authoritarian as all get out).   I was dismissed verbally.

Then I began to talk about how important this is and how upset I am that citizens are being targeted for expressing the same view I have when they do this in public.  As has so often happened before with this Rep. if you become even politely challenging they cut off the call.  Happened again.

Time to unleash our own determination, everyone.  Push back and call these people.  They are dishonest and uncaring.

    •  Cup, this is worth a diary (7+ / 0-)

Lots of great detail, plus ending with a call to action. Go for it!

    •  Please diary. (7+ / 0-)

I would like to have an outline to call mine who sounds remarkably similar to yours.  I need more points to refute the stupid I always get.

      •  Just called Joe Donnelly, Indiana senator. (4+ / 0-)

He seems to be taking calls by answering machine.  I always hated that about Evan Bayh's office.  Hope this isn't going to continue.

Also called Dan Coats.  There is an article on Think Progress that might address this but haven't read it yet.  The talking point (life raft) the GOP seem to be getting is mental health, focus on mental health.

Anyway, Coats' aide gave me a rendition of how important the second amendment was as a response to a simple "I support the measures the President has proposed" and "Do you have any feedback on how the Senator feels about these".  Also told me the Senator does not support taking away all firearms.  When I said no one is proposing that the aide quickly backed off that point.

Sum total was that Dan Coats, US Senator, thinks we need to have a discussion.  That's it.  So I followed up with a request for action statement and said doing nothing was just not reasonable.  I also dissed the NRA leadership with my "Mother Jones" information.

Talking back is something I had to try in small doses.  I think the first times I called my Reps I nearly fainted and simply read off my prepared comments.  Now I feel comfortable with it and call regularly.

I tear into them.  Not shy or nervous at all but I want the correct facts.  The mental health issue is of course, important but I will be scathingly sarcastic when I point out that Republicans are the ones who not only brought us to this point, ala Reagan, but they are the ones holding up adequet health care for all.  So they are the hold up on better health care and they want everyone to have access to guns.  Pretty simple to point out that they are the reason we are having these problems.  I will be calling Sen Toomey and Rep Kelly tomorrow.  And next week and for a while.

when I call Rep. Buschon again for the third day in a row.

Got an email yesterday that Organizing for America/Obama for America has a new iteration.  Organizing for Action.  Now that has a nice ring to it!

I am no longer shy and nervous so that's a testament to how experience changes things.  People have to try and do this until they get over the hump and never think that it doesn't matter or someone else will do it so they don't have to.

Reading about how gerrymandering resulted in the crazy belligerence in the House I am reminded that that means the populace is against the extremists but were prevented from voting in representative legislators.  Time to pay the piper when you rig the system and people are against what you are pushing on them.
